Letter to the editor

I write as a lifelong progressive in support of Measure V. It is loudly proclaimed, but also true, that California's — and America's — most pressing economic need is for more housing affordable for working-class and middle-class families.
Progressives especially should push for this, concerned as they are for the welfare of these income groups. Does Measure V promise more affordable and middle-class housing? It certainly does. Does it promise park land and open space? Yes.
Is it in all ways perfect? Probably not, but Davis is a science- and environmentally friendly city that respects technical expertise, which has signed of on Measure V. In the real world, this project is about as good as one could hope for.
But, above all, let us progressives especially avoid the temptation of NIMBYism and liberal smugness. Let us welcome into our city those working families and young people who wish to join us. No doubt there will be many among them to whom even we well-educated and enlightened liberals will want to tip our hats.
